(IM) was primarily
conceived to increase
gross national income.
The target set for cumulative
committed investments
between 2006 and 2025, under
the IMplan, was RM383 billion.
According to the Iskandar
Regional Development
Authority (IRDA), 34.37%of
the aspired figure has already
been accrued, with 11 years
still at hand to achieve the
intended target. Of these
cumulative committed
investments, 64% comprise
domestic investments and
36% from foreign investors.

The most important agenda for
IRDA is to ensure that the economic
growth in IM is sustainable. This is
not limited to just a steady flow of
new investments into the economic
region, but more importantly, the
development of an ecosystem that
allows businesses to grow and
prosper, communities to participate
in and benefit from the progress,
yet without causing damage to the
natural environment.
“Our emphasis is on adopting a
green lifestyle in all relevant
initiatives of IM. This is evident with
the conceptualisation of the
Iskandar Malaysia Smart City
Framework, developed and
launched in November 2012,
during COP18 held in Doha, Qatar
in 2012. To ensure communities in
Iskandar Malaysia have equal
opportunities to participate in the
development, IRDA launched
socio-economic enhancement
initiatives, such as the ‘Friends of
Iskandar Malaysia’ programme that
helps villagers in 14 mukims in
the economic corridor embark on
new self-sustaining business
ventures in line with the promoted
sectors, for example, eco-tourism
and agro-tourism.”

on the second phase of the
Comprehensive Development Plan
(CDP). “The key for IMnow, in line
with the CDP objective, is to ensure
further growth and progress, so as
to fulfill the IMvision – ‘to become
a strong and sustainable metropolis
of international standing’,” says
IRDA chief executive Datuk Ismail
Ibrahim. While moving forward to
seek both domestic and foreign
investments to ensure catalytic
projects are successfully delivered,
IRDA continues to ensure that the
infrastructure within IM is top-
notch, and education and healthcare
provisions in the city are of high
quality and accessible.
There are
nine economic
sectors
that are piloted and
promotedwithin IM to increase
national income. These are food
and agro processing; financial
advisory and consulting;
petrochemical and oleochemical;
education; healthcare; logistics;
electrical and electronics; tourism;
and creative industries. These have
increased economic activity,
created jobs, precipitated a dire
need for employees and talent, and
consequently fuelled the demand
for property and real estate.
Shenzen of the south
With economy enhanced and an
urgent need for skilled workers,
IRDA developed programmes such
as the Iskandar Malaysia Creative
Industry Talent Development
Programme; Finishing School for
Hospitality and Tourism, and Oil
and Gas Sectors; National Talent
Enhancement Programme (NTEP);
Career, Business and Skills
Carnival (KEPAK); and a Talent
Outreach Programme – to fulfil
the demand. Places like Legoland
and Hello Kitty theme parks
(with more theme parks to come),
Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia
Studios, high-end and smart-
designed residential development
projects, hospitals, schools,
universities, hotels, factories and
manufacturing plants sprouted,
along with a thriving residential,
commercial and industrial property
construction scene. IMhas earned
itself recognition as a force to be
reckoned with. It has propelled
the national transformation
agenda in building a high-income
society with a strong economy
while improving the quality of life
inMalaysia.
